AWS Week in Review - October 8th to October 14th, 2012

 

Let's take a quick look at what happened in AWS-land last week:

Monday, October 8	AWS friends at AWS Partner 8KMiles released a new presentation, Email Architecture using Amazon SES.
Tuesday, October 9	AWS added two new checks to the AWS Trusted Advisor - S3 Bucket Policy and Idle Elastic Load Balancer. Jeff posted another episode of The AWS Report, Balan Subramanian talked about the Amazon Simple Workflow Service.
Wednesday, October 10	AWS introduced lots of new features for AWS GovCloud (US). AWS announced that AWS is now used by more than 300 government agencies and 1500 educational institutions. AWS published a number of new AWS case studies including Ask.fm, Automobil Lamborghini, Avianca, Politechnico di Milano, Shaw Media, and Swisstopo. AWS added SSL support to Amazon RDS for SQL Server.
Thursday, October 11	Amazon RDS for MySQL now supports promotion of read replicas. Version 2012.09 of the Amazon Linux AMI is now available.
Friday, October 12	This week AWS Marketplace added many new listings including Openbravo, Splunk Storm, iMeet, and ERP Oracle in the Cloud.
Sunday, October 14	AWS now provide console and API access to EC2 Spot Instance Bid Status.

Friday,October 19	You can now launch EC2 Micro Instances in a Virtual Private Cloud.

Monday, October 1	We launched the AWS Test Drive program to make it easier for you to get started with Oracle applications. Jeff's UK counterpart Ryan Shuttleworth posted the slides from his AWS for the Retail Industry webinar.
Tuesday, October 2	AWS released a new version of the AWS SDK for Ruby. You can now customize Elastic Beanstalk using configuration files.
Wednesday, October 3	AWS launched the Mailbox Simulator for the Amazon Simple Email Service.
Thursday, October 4	Amazon S3 now supports website redirects.
Friday, October 5	AWS enabled sharing of Elastic MapReduce job flows across IAM accounts.
Sunday, October 7	The AWS Marketplace now supports Identity and Access Management.

Monday, September 24	The good folks at Newvem published an article on Getting Started with AWS Direct Connect.
Tuesday, September 25	NASDAQ OMX announced FinQloud, a cloud solution for the financial services industry. AWS introduced Provisioned IOPS for Amazon RDS.
Wednesday, September 26	AWS announced that Amazon RDS now supports SQL Server 2012.
Thursday, September 27	You can now run Amazon RDS for Oracle Database starting at just $30/month. The AWS Management Console now includes support for CloudFront Private Content. AWS added two new Direct Connect providers, Telx and Atlantic Metro.
Friday, September 28	AWS added over 50 new listings to the AWS Marketplace including many popular OSS offerings from Turnkey Linux such as Canvas,Sencha, and SugarCRM. AWS also added GoAnimate For Business, Riverbed Cloud Steelhead WAN Optimization and others.

Monday, September 17	§   AWS added four new checks to the AWS Trusted Advisor including EC2 Reserved Instance Optimization, VPN Tunnel Redundancy, RDS Backup, and RDS Multi-AZ.
Tuesday, September 18	§   AWS introduced Auto Scaling termination policies to give you additonal control over the scale-down process.
Friday, September 21	§ Developer Andy Chilton released version 0.11.0 of Awssum, a collection of node.js modules for AWS.

Tuesday, September 11	AWS launched the EC2 Reserved Instance Marketplace.
Wednesday, September 12	AWS  announced that Cluster GPU Instances are now available in the EU West (Ireland) region and inside of VPCs. AWS  opened up a new CloudFront / Route 53 edge location in Madrid, Spain.
Thursday, September 13	AWS  published a tutorial to show you how to manage ASP.Net session state using DynamoDB. AWS  announced that Oracle Data Pump can now be used to import and export data from an Amazon RDS DB Instance. AWS  announced the AWS Global Start-Up Challenge. You can now use RDS for SQL Server inside of a Virtual Private Cloud. AWS  added additional VPN features to the Virtual Private Cloud.

Tuesday, September 4	Jeff posted a new AWS Report, Michael Kellen of Sage Bionetworks. AWS announced that AWS Elastic Beanstalk is now available in Singapore.
Wednesday, September 5	AWS posted a new AWS case study. This study describes how Edmodo uses Amazon RDS to handle 500 database connections per second and 200K web requests per minute. Amazon CloudFront now supports Cookies, Price Classes, and enhanced logging.
Friday, September 7	Jeff posted another new AWS Report, Colin Lazier talks about Amazon Glacier.

Monday, August 13	AWS updated AWS Direct Connect with new locations and AWS Management Console support. AWS published another AWS Report, this one featuring Kate Matsudaira, CTO of Decide.com.
Thursday, August 16	AWS added additional features to Amazon RDS for Oracle Database, including support for running in a VPC, support for Oracle XMLDB, and Oracle Application Express (APEX). AWS published a new white paper, the Total Cost of (Non) Ownership of Web Applications in the Cloud.
Sunday, August 19	AWS released Python support for Elastic Beanstalk including seamless integration with Amazon RDS.

Monday, August 20	AWS released Amazon Glacier, archival storage for one penny per Gigabyte per month.
Tuesday, August 21	Amazon DynamoDB now supports storage and retrieval of binary data. AWS released AWS Cost Allocation for customer bills.
Wednesday, August 22	You can now launch EC2 Cluster Compute Instances in the US West (Oregon) region.
Thursday, August 23	Amazon RDS for SQL Server now supports SQL Server Agent.
Friday, August 24	This week, AWS continued to add many new products to AWS Marketplace, including two AMI-deployable CloudOptimizer products from CloudOpt Incorporated, and SaaS products Docunym, HotRiot Web Application Development Engine, Bias, and Insight. AWS is also excited to welcome our first South American vendor to AWS Marketplace, Artsoft Sistemas, who listed two versions of Fenicia this week.
